For the fifth year in a row Phil cobbled together a Blues program to fill the time slot for Murphy’s Magic Mess on KZUM. Every Labor Day Weekend KZUM preempts all programming for 83 hours of Blues. In the past this has been more of a challenge for Phil and the rest of the Mess, this year was different. The challenge was to whittle it down to two hours of music. Didn’t quite happen that way, he had 2 hours and 27 minutes of music and Murf joined the fun with another 47 minutes of music. Clearly not everything on their lists got played.
Kate was off for the weekend attending a family gathering. Michelle and her husband stopped in briefly to share the fun of Murf’s birthday.
The following is the played list of music.

On Sunday 7 September 2014 we’ll return with our usual Mess of music and fun, plus the second half of the SJ Tucker and Betsy Tucker interview from 19 August.
This week on Murphy’s Magic Mess the Mama Dragon and her minions decided to take a walk on the Weird Side with their music. Starting with Walkin’ in the Woods by Elvendrums they took a path of oddness that hopefully entertained the listeners.
A special note about the third track, Madiba by Ricky Kej and Wouter Kellerman: 18 July was the birthday of the late Nelson Mandela, an inspiration to his people in South Africa and indeed to the world as a whole. Madiba was the name given to him by his people, it means Father. This track comes from the CD Winds of Samsara. Samsara is from the Sanskrit for “cycle of life” or “reincarnation”.
As a tribute to the late James Garner, actor, we played the full TV theme from The Rockford Files.
Wytches’ Chant ’98 – Inkubus Sukkubus – Away with the Faeries
Last year started a new membership drive at KZUM, the Soundbackers Union. An exclusive group of member-listeners who get special benefits from KZUM – including discounted concert tickets, elite swag, and other exciting benefits. For one week every June the station does a fund raising campaign for the Soundbackers Union. Murphy’s Magic Mess put together a special playlist for the event. The campaign for the 2014 membership of the Soundbackers ends on the 23rd at midnight Central time, but KZUM is always open to new member-listeners and donations to support Nebraska’s first and only community radio station.
Tracks 7 and 8 were arranged in honor of Sparky T. Rabbit, one of the voices of Lunacy. Sparky passed away a little over two weeks ago. As Murf said during the show, “what is remembered never dies.”

Father’s Day on the Mess was a fun and sometimes confusing mess. The Mama Dragon had two master discs to play from, so Phil found himself bouncing back and forth between the two. Let us hope that the lamb March promises comes to us soon! Sunday morning greeted Murf and her Minions with a blast of COLD! And some tech and mechanic issues that made for an interesting morning at the Mess. Luckily everything worked out well enough and Phil’s vehicular woes are currently taken care of.
We’d like to give Sister Jasmine of the Glorious Gospel our thanks for helping Murf get set up as *K8 was running to get Phil to the studio after his van broke down.
A new segment has been added to the show recently. Or we should say a segment has returned. A bit of news and information on the Pagan community. Years ago Murf’s former cohost Diz did such a segment and after he left the show it just hasn’t been happening. Murf wanted to add it back, so we are doing so. We actually started this in February, but it didn’t become official until this weekend.
Phil updated us on the condition of Donald Michael Kraig, author and teacher, who is battling cancer. The prognosis is not bright. Our thoughts and prayers go to him and his family. May Asclepius be with him! And praises to the Gods of healing, Morning Glory Zell is able to return home after tackle kidney issues related to her cancer. She still need dialysis, but she can go home after each session now.
Phil also talked about the upcoming CD release from Mama Gina, “The Undertaker’s Daughter” and briefly about the IndieGoGo campaign to help fund Tuatha Dea‘s new project “Tufa Tales.”

While preparing the show notes today, RevKess stumbled across this site that is devoted to Leigh Ann Hussey. Her music is available for free download at www.motogrrl.org/Bands, but this site has details on her life, music career and her unfortunately and untimely passing. For those of you who enjoy Leigh Ann’s music and want to learn more about her, please visit the sites linked and share her life and love of music with others. Leigh Ann was also an author, you can hear Colin Hussey read her novella “The Lover of Lord Eithras“, or read the story. There doesn’t seem to be any videos on YouTube or elsewhere for Leigh Ann’s music, something just might have to be done about that.
