MMM: A Weird Mess

This week on Murphy’s Magic Mess the Mama Dragon and her minions decided to take a walk on the Weird Side with their music. Starting with Walkin’ in the Woods by Elvendrums they took a path of oddness that hopefully entertained the listeners.

A special note about the third track, Madiba by Ricky Kej and Wouter Kellerman: 18 July was the birthday of the late Nelson Mandela, an inspiration to his people in South Africa and indeed to the world as a whole. Madiba was the name given to him by his people, it means Father. This track comes from the CD Winds of Samsara. Samsara is from the Sanskrit for “cycle of life” or “reincarnation”.

As a tribute to the late James Garner, actor, we played the full TV theme from The Rockford Files.

A Windy Mess – MMM 071314

Its been kind of breezy around these parts the last several days, so Murf thought it would be an awesome idea to use Wind as a theme for this weekend’s show. In the playlist below you will find a collection of mostly “windy” music. This is part of a  monthly series of shows that will address the elements. Expect us to do Fire for August, Water for September, and Earth for October.

With quite a bit of the music in the first hour or so being music that Phil has podcast permission for, you can click on the image to the left to listen to “Selections from the Mess” and hear some of what you might have missed (or enjoyed live) on Sunday 13 July 2014. With any luck, Phil will be able to do these “Selections” on a regular basis again starting with this edition and continuing on. This edition of Selections was edited and posted to the Pagan-Musings Podcast Channel on Wednesday 16 July 2014.

MMM: Independence 2014

fireworksOn Murphy’s Magic Mess we like to celebrate the holidays with music and stories. That’s just what we did this weekend for Independence Day. Murf, however, was at home with one of those miserable summer colds. *K8 and Phil managed to muddle through without her. Phil putting together the first hour, *K8 the second. As you can tell from the playlist, the show became something resembling Hindu Patriotism. Not intended, but it did come out that way.

This week is one of those special tracking weeks that we have to do at KZUM. That means that we have to track and report to SoundExchange everything we play, when we started the track and when we ended. This gives us the opportunity to play longer tracks. Sure, we could play 10-45 minute tracks every week if we wanted to, but we want to give the listener as much variety as we can every week. We’ll be doing this again in August.

MMM: *K8’s 3rd Dozen

drunk_dragon_drunkon_by_sssilver_c-d32orug*K8 celebrated her birthday over the weekend, which means that it was her birthday show! She turned 3 dozen and had a lot of fun putting music together for the show. The new age segment of the show was planned out, for the most part, by Phil – otherwise the show was *K8’s.

A special note about Track 11: The Kirtan Aid CD is a special compilation put together to benefit the children of an orphanage in Rishikesh, India. From the back of the CD case: “Kirtan Aid isthe music of yoga in service to the planet. 100% of the profits from this album will build a shelter for homeless orphans at a sanctuary for children called Ramana’s Garden in Rishikech, India.” You can learn more about the Sat Nam Foundation’s Kirtan Aid projects at www.satnamfoundation.org.

MMM: In Like a Lion, 3-2-2014

Let us hope that the lamb March promises comes to us soon!  Sunday morning greeted Murf and her Minions with a blast of COLD! And some tech and mechanic issues that made for an interesting morning at the Mess. Luckily everything worked out well enough and Phil’s vehicular woes are currently taken care of.

We’d like to give Sister Jasmine of the Glorious Gospel our thanks for helping Murf get set up as *K8 was running to get Phil to the studio after his van broke down.

A new segment has been added to the show recently. Or we should say a segment has returned. A bit of news and information on the Pagan community. Years ago Murf’s former cohost Diz did such a segment and after he left the show it just hasn’t been happening. Murf wanted to add it back, so we are doing so. We actually started this in February, but it didn’t become official until this weekend.

She still need dialysis, but she can go home after each session now.

MMM: Sky Stuff & Springish 2-23-14

Thank you to all our wonderful artists we get to play every week on Murphy’s Magic Mess on KZUM-HD in Lincoln, NE. We’d also like to thank all our wonderful listener-members who either renewed or became members of KZUM this past week during the spring 2014 pledge drive. You are who we do this for every week.

Phil was in a sky and Spring mood Sunday morning, and the first several pieces reflect the sky and many of the rest reflect the call for Spring. Murf selected most of the second half of the show with a few contributions from Phil and some suggestions from *K8. A big kudos to *K8 for typing up the play list during the show. Phil has gone through any made any corrections that might have been needed.

It was a real joy to see Sister Gladysteen in the studio. She is one of the hosts of Glorious Gospel on KZUM and one we do not get to see on a regular basis. We are looking forward to seeing here again now that Spring is starting to make itself known in our area. The first piece we played was for her, as Paul Spaeth’s CD is very spiritual. Throughout the program we updated you on a couple of Elders in the global Pagan community. Donald Michael Kraig is in hospital and battling pancreatic cancer, the prognosis is not good. He is in good spirits, though. His family and friends have been at his side as much as possible and number of Pagans around the world have been lending their energy to him, to ease him and make him more comfortable at this time. Morning Glory Zell has also been in hospital, she is battling complications from her recurring cancer. She’s doing well. Will hopefully be returning home soon. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with the medical expenses incurred during MG’s hospital stay.

Lastly, we spoke briefly about the murals at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in England. Alder Hey is slated for demolition. The beautiful murals that are risk were painted by volunteer artists from across England, including singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist George Nicholas. George is the front man for Cernunnos Rising, whom we played a piece from towards the end of the show. There is an online petition to preserve the murals, you can find out more here.
