World Goddess Day on the Mess

September 7, 2014 was World Goddess Day. An initiative started by Brazilian Dianic priest Claudiney Prieto. To celebrate the Mama Dragon and her Minions put together a collection of Goddess inspire music from new age and Pagan musicians. Include in the show was the second (and third) portion of Phil’s interview with SJ Tucker and Betsy Tinney. On August 19, Sooj and Betsy were in Lincoln, NE to do a show at the Ferguson House, a concert sponsored by the Unitarian Church of Lincoln’s Wayward Concert Series and KZUM Community Radio. Sooj has been to Lincoln many times over the years, but this was Betsy’s first time. Featured along with the interview is a selection of music from both of these Goddesses on Earth.

Murphy’s Magic Mess airs live every Sunday at 9am Central on KZUM-Lincoln/KZUM-HD 89.3FM and online at www.kzum.org. Murf and her minions have been bringing the KZUM family new age and Pagan music for over 20 years and is the world’s longest running Pagan content radio program.

A Messy Blues

ad bannerFor the fifth year in a row Phil cobbled together a Blues program to fill the time slot for Murphy’s Magic Mess on KZUM. Every Labor Day Weekend KZUM preempts all programming for 83 hours of Blues. In the past this has been more of a challenge for Phil and the rest of the Mess, this year was different. The challenge was to whittle it down to two hours of music. Didn’t quite happen that way, he had 2 hours and 27 minutes of music and Murf  joined the fun with another 47 minutes of music. Clearly not everything on their lists got played.

Kate was off for the weekend attending a family gathering. Michelle and her husband stopped in briefly to share the fun of Murf’s birthday.

The following is the played list of music.

PMP: Celia, an interactive interview

KaliSara and RevKess decided to try something a little different with this weekend’s edition of PMP. A live, interactive interview with their guest Celia. In this interactive interview the listeners and fans got to help with asking the questions! Though no one braved the lines and called in with their questions, the hosts did receive several questions and suggestions on where to go with the show. To all those who added to the fun, thank you!

Two years and one month ago Celia visited with RevKess on Musica Pagani. That show aired
lived on 10 July 2012. They first connected face to face at her 2012 concert in Omaha, NE at the First Unitarian Church. RevKess reviewed that concert on the Pagan Weekly News on 5 March 2012.

Earlier this summer Celia released the digital version of her new album Shaman Journey, soon to be available on CD through CDBaby. She has toured the new release across the country with 30 concerts in 60 days. Quite the ambitious tour! She’s back home in Prescott, AZ with her partner Charlie who also went on tour with her. The album is the first in a series of Sound Spirals that Celia has been working, recording her live concerts and taking the best cuts of her newer meditative and energetic pieces to create collections of healing and inspiring music for the listening audience. These Sound Spirals came about as a response to the comments from fans that Celia’s music has taken them on a journey, a seeing, or other voyage of inspiration as well as in response to the requests for music that can be used in meditation, reiki, or other spiritual practices.

Celia spoke in depth about her music, her inspirations, her life, and her love. You’ll have to tune into the archive of the show (click the show logo above) to hear about why she does what she does.

Celia’s Golden Rule: Do unto others as others would have you do unto them.

Celia & RevKess, Omaha 2012

Celia paraphrased singer and songwriter Woody Guthrie during the show, “It’s not how good a song is, it’s how much good a song does.” The full quote from Guthrie reads:

“I hate a song that makes you think that you are not any good. I hate a song that makes you think that you are just born to lose. Bound to lose. No good to nobody. No good for nothing.Because you are too old or too young or too fat or too slim too ugly or too this or too that. Songs that run you down or poke fun at you on account of your bad luck or hard traveling.

I am out to fight those songs to my very last breath of air and my last drop of blood. I am out to sing songs that will prove to you that this is your world and that if it has hit you pretty hard and knocked you for a dozen loops, no matter what color, what size you are, how you are built.

I am out to sing the songs that make you take pride in yourself and in your work.”

Celia’s Laughter Yoga Party on the Phone , Monday through Friday at 11:11am. Call 605-475-3200, code 523391#. Follow Celia on Facebook for more details.

MMM: A Weird Mess

This week on Murphy’s Magic Mess the Mama Dragon and her minions decided to take a walk on the Weird Side with their music. Starting with Walkin’ in the Woods by Elvendrums they took a path of oddness that hopefully entertained the listeners.

A special note about the third track, Madiba by Ricky Kej and Wouter Kellerman: 18 July was the birthday of the late Nelson Mandela, an inspiration to his people in South Africa and indeed to the world as a whole. Madiba was the name given to him by his people, it means Father. This track comes from the CD Winds of Samsara. Samsara is from the Sanskrit for “cycle of life” or “reincarnation”.

As a tribute to the late James Garner, actor, we played the full TV theme from The Rockford Files.

A Windy Mess – MMM 071314

Its been kind of breezy around these parts the last several days, so Murf thought it would be an awesome idea to use Wind as a theme for this weekend’s show. In the playlist below you will find a collection of mostly “windy” music. This is part of a  monthly series of shows that will address the elements. Expect us to do Fire for August, Water for September, and Earth for October.

With quite a bit of the music in the first hour or so being music that Phil has podcast permission for, you can click on the image to the left to listen to “Selections from the Mess” and hear some of what you might have missed (or enjoyed live) on Sunday 13 July 2014. With any luck, Phil will be able to do these “Selections” on a regular basis again starting with this edition and continuing on. This edition of Selections was edited and posted to the Pagan-Musings Podcast Channel on Wednesday 16 July 2014.

PMP: Rev Judith Laxer, Along the Wheel of Time

Rev. Judith Laxer joined KaliSara and RevKess in this week’s edition of Pagan-Musings Podcast to talk about Gaia’s Temple and her new book Along the Wheel of Time: Sacred Stories for Nature Lovers. No stranger to being interviewed or public speaking, Judith also has her own podcast available through iTunes and PodBean. These podcasts are recordings of her monthly worship services she presents at Gaia’s Temple.

Author Bio: Rev. Judith Laxer is a modern day mystic who believes that humor, beauty and the wonders of nature make life worth living. She is the founding Priestess of Gaia’s Temple, an inclusive, Earth-based Ministry where she has written delivered monthly worship services since 2000. Her writing has been featured in Spindleweed Magazine, The Women of Wisdom Anthology, Witches and Pagans Magazine, Living in Season and The Medulla Review. A teacher of the Mysteries, Judith is a keynote speaker and has offered classes and workshops on the return of the Divine Feminine in conferences nationally. She treasures her profession and dedicates her work to restoring the balance of female and male energies in our culture.

Judith left her home in New York in 1989 and found her way to the Pacific Northwest. She’s worked as a stage performer and a psychic. She now has a practice as a professional psychic in Seattle and serves her community as the Priestess at Gaia’s Temple for the last 14 years. Along the way she put pen to paper and wrote eight short stories, one for each point on the Wheel of the Year. In October 2013 she submitted her manuscript to BookTrope and signed her contract for Along the Wheel of the year on Yule 2013. Nine months after her submission the finished project was released. In her visit on PMPChannel she talks in great details about the writing process through to the publishing and marketing of her book.

You can find Judith’s book through her website, on Amazon, and Barnes & Noble. Even better, go to your local new age/metaphysical shop or bookstore and ask them to order it for you. That is one way to help promote Judith’s book – getting the word to the shop owners.

MMM: Independence 2014

fireworksOn Murphy’s Magic Mess we like to celebrate the holidays with music and stories. That’s just what we did this weekend for Independence Day. Murf, however, was at home with one of those miserable summer colds. *K8 and Phil managed to muddle through without her. Phil putting together the first hour, *K8 the second. As you can tell from the playlist, the show became something resembling Hindu Patriotism. Not intended, but it did come out that way.

This week is one of those special tracking weeks that we have to do at KZUM. That means that we have to track and report to SoundExchange everything we play, when we started the track and when we ended. This gives us the opportunity to play longer tracks. Sure, we could play 10-45 minute tracks every week if we wanted to, but we want to give the listener as much variety as we can every week. We’ll be doing this again in August.
