PMP: Chronilus, bards adrift in the ether of a timeless human experience

Chronilus joined KaliSara and RevKess on the show. Focusing on their music and how they are using it to build a tribal feel in the Pagan community.

Chronilus released their first EP in December 2013 to rave reviews. They reached #1 in the Celtic genre for the Seattle area and nationwide at #16 and world wide at #25.  Their music has been peer reviewed on ReverbNation.com.

Their sound is their own. With influences from many musicians and genres, they combine Celtic flavor with Eastern European and African elements. They twist it creatively around the idea of traveling through time (and space) to seek out certain truths and archetypes that outlive civilization. They appeal to history buffs, sociology and psychology interests, sex-positive adults, time travel and sci-fi/fantasy enthusiasts and generally people of wall walks of life and love.

Chronilus were podcast virgins before their visit with PMPChannel.  KaliSara and RevKess were pleased to be the Chronilus bandones to pop their collective cherry for this avenue of social media. Bone Deep the Bard, Manfred, Caera and Sonia were a real joy to have one the show. They talked in depth about their inspirations, aspirations, and beliefs. Representing a true Tribe of people, this quartet of musicians bring their talents to the stage on a regular basis. They are deeply involved in their local community – not just as Pagans, but as members of the local poly community and environmentalists.

They sent along some wonderful music for the hosts to share during the show. Including three pieces that are not yet released on CD. They can be heard on their website, but are not currently available for sale. Heave Home, Longing and The Rede. Christopher Bingham of Bone Poets Orchestra (formerly Gaia Consort) has graciously given Chronilus permission to cover songs from his projects. The Rede being one of those. Longing is a love song, it is not until you reach the third verse that you realize that it is a lesbian love song. Heave Home captures a taste of what Chronilus is.

  1. Heave Home – unreleased
  2. Brigid – Prologue
  3. The Rede (written by Christopher Bingham of Bone Poets Orchestra/Gaia Consort) – unreleased
  4. Longing – unreleased
  5. The Wild Hunt – Prologue

Chronilus EPTheir EP Prologue can be purchased as a CD or digital download from CDBaby. You can find their music on BandCamp and ReverbNation.

On March 21, 2014 they will being doing a benefit concert for Willow Moon, former head of the Everett Pagan Meet Up Group, at Soul Food Coffee House & Fair Trade Emporium in Redmond, WA. For those who cannot make it to the benefit show you can go online and make a donation for Willow Moon. The night of the concert you can also watch it streaming live on the Soul Food site.

UPDATE 3/10/14: Just learned that our friends have reached the #1 slot for Celtic music in the Seattle area again!

PWN: Z & RevKess Return

After a long absence, Zaracon is easing back into podcasting. He joined RevKess this morning for a new edition of Pagan Weekly News. In the first part of the show you will hear why both Z and RevKess have been absent from PWN for a little while.

Here at the Pagan-Musings Podcast Channel we love our musicians and we love to share their music with our listeners. Four of those musically inclined friends are either releasing new CDs this month or working on fund raising campaigns for upcoming CD releases. Mama Gina‘s second CD “The Undertaker’s Daughter” is due out the middle of March. Tuatha Dea is campaigning to raise funds for their “Tufa Tales” project. Heather Dale’s ambitious campaign to not only raise funds for a DVD but to tour her Celtic Avalon workshop is well under way. Frenchy and the Punk are also working on a campaign for their newest musical contribution.

Wiccanate Privilege has been a topic of late for many Pagans of various flavors. David Salisbury was simply musing on his wall Monday night and it turned into a wonderful discourse between many Pagans. If you can, we encourage you to read the thread. A similar discourse took place elsewhere on Facebook.

Heathens on the boundaries of Paganism, RevKess stumbled across a thread in the group Nebraska Heathens United that was inspired by the linked article.

Salem, Mass adds transgender to their non-discrimination laws. Witch City USA is just a little bit further along than some of her neighboring communities. Our gratitude to those who made this possible.

Arizona, among other states, has been battling for certain “freedoms” that would legally allow bigotry – beyond freedom of speech. These religious freedom laws would make it possible for business and professionals to refuse service to anyone who the individuals feel stand against their personal religious beliefs. Heather Greene covers the topic well in her article for the Wild Hunt.

Michigan same-sex marriage trial: RevKess gathered together a selection of links to articles and other coverage related to the on-going trial in Michigan. Those links are all thanks to his friend Cindy Clardy, a former programer on KZUM in Lincoln, NE.

Satanic Panic in South Africa is alive and well. Being spurred on by the Occult Crimes Unit of the South African Police Services and misinformation from evangelicals in the region, citizens are falling victim to false accusations of witchcraft and other demonic activities. IOL News out of South Africa is doing its part to “spread the word” on these supposed crimes and the jumping-to-conclusions by the Occult Crimes Unit.

The Norse Mythology Blog has once again been nominated for Religion Blog of the Year for the Bloggies. If the blog wins again this year it will be inducted into the Bloggies hall of fame, having received the award for three years.

PMP: 2014 Pagan Community Events, and more

Thank you for stopping in to view the notes from our show which aired on Sunday 2 March 2014. KaliSara and RevKess had a wonderful conversation about community events and festivals. Unfortunately, the gremlins decided that they wanted to have some fun as well. Thus the audio from RevKess’s end is chopping. For that we sincerely apologize. Between the weather, ancient wiring in his apartment, and other technical issues, there is nothing that could be done to fix the problem.

That said, the conversation was full of wonderful information.
As RevKess was prepping for the show he did a simple Google search for the term “2014 Pagan Festivals”. One of the first links to come up was an article at About.Com in their Paganism/Wicca section. More of an almanac than a listing of festivals, it has some very interesting information. A list of ancient festivals, mostly Greek; birthdays of important individuals in the Pagan movement as well as those who have had influenced on our lives – Joseph Campbell for example.
KaliSara also found some wonderful links on the web, those are listed below:
They spoke in some small detail about a rural-snall town based Pagan group in Central Nebraska. Prairie Star Circle hosted the Kearney Pagan Pride Day in 2013. KaliSara and her family attended that event. Below is the Facebook link and official website of Prairie Star Circle:
RevKess noted that there is also a Nebraska based Druid group, Prairie  Shadow ProtoGrove is based out of Omaha. Their Facebook group is currently closed to the public, but one can ask to join.

MMM: In Like a Lion, 3-2-2014

Let us hope that the lamb March promises comes to us soon!  Sunday morning greeted Murf and her Minions with a blast of COLD! And some tech and mechanic issues that made for an interesting morning at the Mess. Luckily everything worked out well enough and Phil’s vehicular woes are currently taken care of.

We’d like to give Sister Jasmine of the Glorious Gospel our thanks for helping Murf get set up as *K8 was running to get Phil to the studio after his van broke down.

A new segment has been added to the show recently. Or we should say a segment has returned. A bit of news and information on the Pagan community. Years ago Murf’s former cohost Diz did such a segment and after he left the show it just hasn’t been happening. Murf wanted to add it back, so we are doing so. We actually started this in February, but it didn’t become official until this weekend.

Phil updated us on the condition of Donald Michael Kraig, author and teacher, who is battling cancer. The prognosis is not bright. Our thoughts and prayers go to him and his family. May Asclepius be with him! And praises to the Gods of healing, Morning Glory Zell is able to return home after tackle kidney issues related to her cancer. She still need dialysis, but she can go home after each session now.

Phil also talked about the upcoming CD release from Mama Gina, “The Undertaker’s Daughter” and briefly about the IndieGoGo campaign to help fund Tuatha Dea‘s new project “Tufa Tales.”

We’d also like to thank all our wonderful listener-members who either renewed or became members of KZUM this past week during the spring 2014 pledge drive. You are who we do this for every week.

Phil was in a sky and Spring mood Sunday morning, and the first several pieces reflect the sky and many of the rest reflect the call for Spring. Murf selected most of the second half of the show with a few contributions from Phil and some suggestions from *K8. A big kudos to *K8 for typing up the play list during the show. Phil has gone through any made any corrections that might have been needed.

It was a real joy to see Sister Gladysteen in the studio. She is one of the hosts of Glorious Gospel on KZUM and one we do not get to see on a regular basis. We are looking forward to seeing here again now that Spring is starting to make itself known in our area. The first piece we played was for her, as Paul Spaeth’s CD is very spiritual. He is in good spirits, though. His family and friends have been at his side as much as possible and number of Pagans around the world have been lending their energy to him, to ease him and make him more comfortable at this time. Morning Glory Zell has also been in hospital, she is battling complications from her recurring cancer. She’s doing well. Will hopefully be returning home soon. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with the medical expenses incurred during MG’s hospital stay.

Lastly, we spoke briefly about the murals at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in England. Alder Hey is slated for demolition. The beautiful murals that are risk were painted by volunteer artists from across England, including singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist George Nicholas. George is the front man for Cernunnos Rising, whom we played a piece from towards the end of the show. There is an online petition to preserve the murals, you can find out more here.

PMP: Hypersensitivity & the Pagan

Shauna Aura Knight joined RevKess and KaliSara for a wonderful discussion of hypersensitivity with a focus on the Pagan world. Relaying anecdotes from personal life, ritual situations, and throwing in some armchair psychology, the three had a rather informative talk about how being hypersensitive to their environment and other contributing factors can learn to move through life with a better understanding of how their selves react to the world.

A term that cropped up once or twice in the conversation was “kinesthetic”. In context of the conversation, Shauna was referring to kinesthetic sense. WikiPedia defines that as

Proprioception, the kinesthetic sense, provides the parietal cortex of the brain with information on the relative positions of the parts of the body. Neurologists test this sense by telling patients to close their eyes and touch their own nose with the tip of a finger. Assuming proper proprioceptive function, at no time will the person lose awareness of where the hand actually is, even though it is not being detected by any of the other senses. Proprioception and touch are related in subtle ways, and their impairment results in surprising and deep deficits in perception and action.

The idea of “micro expressions” was brought up just over half way into the show. If you are a fan of TV dramas then you might be familiar with the show Lie To Me. Taking the idea of “profiling” to the extreme of observing the smallest shifts in body language or facial expressions to better understand the emotional state of the individual. The TV show is based on the work of Dr. Paul Ekman.

Towards the end of the show, the focus shifted to Pagan leadership.

PMP: Shauna Aura Knight & Leadership

KaliSara has an essay coming out in the Moon Books publication Paganism 101: An introduction to Paganism by 101 Pagans, released February 2014. Her essay is in response to the topic of the Pagan priesthood. She shared her essay on the show while encouraging the listener to pick up a copy for themselves, available in Kindle and paperback.

We dived into a discussion of an idea proposed by Christine Kraemer on her Sermons from the Mound blog on Patheos.com. She proposes that bloggers and commenters sit down to coffee or some such and talk face to face. Great idea, but many bloggers and commenters rarely have the opportunity to do so, most of them living long distances from each other. But it does inspire a good idea…. Instead of spending all our time on Facebook, Twitter or wherever, we should spend time with people. Face to face.

Shauna Aura Knight was supposed to join us on the air, but a scheduling conflict came up which prevented her from doing so. We carried on as best we could without her direct input while discussed some of her recent articles on leadership in the Pagan community. Three articles in particular are available in the series as of show time.

In her Grassroots article, Shauna makes reference and links to an article by Ivo Dominguez Jr on the Pagans&Witches site about being the agent of change. She has also recently published an article on PaganActivist in which she talks about that dreaded idea, “paying for services“, which prompted RevKess to remember an article he wrote on the same topic for Off the Beaten Path.

Towards the end of the first hour we paid homage to Dr E, the conjure man and Santero, as well as asked for healing energy to be sent towards Donald Michael Kraig, author and teacher, and Morning Glory Zell, Oberon’s beloved wife. Donald Michael Kraig is the author of numerous books and articles, including Modern Magick and Modern Sex Magick. He has been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer.

Morning Glory, the beloved wife of Oberon Zell (founder of the Church of All Worlds) is an avid devotee of the Goddess. She paid KaliSara and RevKess an unexpected visit while they were interviewing Ariel, the editrix of The Green Egg, and Oberon in an episode of Pagan-Musing Podcast in June 2011. She spoke of her Goddess statue collection and Goddess retreats. She entered the ICU with kidney failure and dehydration related to recurring battle with cancer.
