PMP: Marion Zimmer Bradley, sex abuse, separate the art from the artist

KaliSara and RevKess find themselves once again delving into a dark and touchy subject. That of child molestation and abuse. Earlier this year they talked frankly about predators in the Pagan community after the news broke that well known author, musician, and teacher Kenny Klein had been arrested on over 20 counts of possession of child pornography, with the intent to distribute. That lead to his ex-wife Tzipora Katz and their son Jo Pax visiting with Ariel Monserrat of Green Egg Magazine during a special live broadcast of the Green Egg Radio Hour here on the Pagan-Musings Podcast Channel. Earlier this month it was brought back into the world view of fandom and Pagandom that author Marion Zimmer Bradley was also involved in such activities.

Marion Zimmer Bradley, author of such books as Darkover and Mists of Avalon (and their related series), famed science fiction and fantasy author, died in 1999. Fifteen years later her books are still successful and influential to both the sci-fi/fantasy community (the fandom) and to the Pagan community. Co-founder of the Society for Creative Anachronisms, she is lauded by thousands as an influential figure in the latter half of the 20th Century. But she had a dark side, not the least of which being married to Walter Breen, known pedophile and child abuser.

PMP: Using Your Sixth Sense(s)

In this episode RevKess and KaliSara talk about using what we commonly call the “sixth sense.” The conversation started out with a brief discussion of the five basic human senses and the other senses that humans have. Yes, there are more than five senses.

ESP – Extrasensory perception may be a better term to use than “sixth sense”. What your hosts focused on were senses that go beyond what is commonly accepted by “normal” or “mundane” people. Telepathy, empathy, clairaudience, clairvoyance. These are just a few of the terms people are familiar with when it comes to ESP. Aura sight, intuition, and other senses go beyond what is generally accepted by most people.

Most everyone has some form of ESP, whether they know it or not. Intuition is perhaps the most common sense that people have. An innate ability to sense what is going on in any given situation, or the ability to “read” a person’s body language. In these cases, perhaps, it would be more accurate to say that these are extensions of the “normal” five senses.

Other forms ESP are precognitive abilities, these can include those used in psychic dreaming and even various forms of divination. The reading of body language falls into the intuition category of ESP. Professional intuitives combine their psychic abilities with body language, voice inflection and other cues to interpret their medium – tarot, runes, bones, etc. The TV program Lie to Me uses these verbal and nonverbal cues in almost psychic manner, inspired by the work of Paul Ekman and the Facial Action Coding System he intuited.

KaliSara and RevKess spent some time talking about empathy, aura sight, and other forms of ESP that they or people they know possess. Along with the acceptance that these abilities exist, they emphasized two basic concepts in “using your sixth sense(s).” Practice, practice, practice! Everyone has their own skills/talents/abilities.

Long time listener and former guest on the show, Faith Hamilton (Grandmother Oak Sanctuary), shared some exercises with us on our Facebook page last weekend. These exercises all go towards the concept of practice.

So I hear you’re doing a show on the 6th sense […]. I don’t have a mic or I’d join you in chat. However I do have some original content I will share with you to use if you like. I’ve been teaching others how to use their 6th sense for years and how to recognize auras and sense energy. It is not an easy task to undertake. Some people catch on very naturally. Others just don’t get it and probably never will. The most important thing to remember is that every one has talents. Just like some people can sing, while others can not; some people have gifts that others will not. Whether or not they can learn them without having the talent naturally, is totally up to the determination of the person trying to learn.

I have found that the most successful way to raise your 6th sense is to practice raising the other 5- sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. There are many exorcises you can do to raise these that are simple to do and when practices regularly can prove to show really good results. For example. On a good clear night when you have a clear view of the night sky and stars, make yourself comfy and relax. Now pick out a nice bright star. Watch it flicker, try to focus only on it for a few moments. Then widening your vision slightly as if you were looking over the star’s shoulder, pick a star that is almost behind it, but not as bright. Now focus on it until you see it clearly- then do the same thing again, picking a dimmer star and focusing on it. Do this until the star you are focused on is hard to look at because it is so dim. Stay focused as long as you can, then without losing that focus, very slowly widen your vision to look at the entire night sky. You should, if you did it right, see more stars than you ever imagined.

Gazing at stars like that helps strengthen your eyes and your awareness, because before you started, you would not have been aware of all the other stars up there. Now you can see millions more. Another exorcise helps your sense of touch. Save your pennies in a jar. Just pennies- no dimes, nickels or other coins. When you get a good hand full of them, drop them in a pouch or bag you can easily reach in to. Now sit at a table or on the floor and close your eyes. Pull each penny out one at a time. Feel its texture. Is it smooth? Does it have rough edges? Does it feel heavy, or lighter? Then try your best, without looking, to put the pennies in order by date in front of you. Its very hard, but amusingly fun. You may be surprised at your results.

Another exercise requires a friend and some pre-planning. Have your friend fill paper bags with different objects for you to smell. You have to figure out what they are by smell alone. A slice of apple? A rose?

For hearing you need a place where things come and go. An example would be a less traveled road. Or if you live on a farm like I do, you can listen for humming birds to come to the feeder or bumble bees. The point is to focus on the sound and follow the sound for as long as you can. Just like with the stars exorcise, at one point, things will become very loud. I once followed the sound of a truck for several miles only to have a bug fly by my ear that sounded so loud I thought a jet went by.

As your 5 senses develop, your 6th sense will develop naturally to compensate. You will notice shadows easier. You will pick up on sounds not heard before. You will see movement you may have not noticed at other times. You might feel changes in air pressure, or taste moisture in the air.

Psychic etiquette. Boundaries, permission. Another concept of using ESP that RevKess and KaliSara focused on was that of etiquette in regards to ESP. Consent. Respecting boundaries. Getting permission. Karen Harrison has a section in her book Everyday Psychic that details some of the psychic etiquette that was spoken.

Two examples of boundary crossing were brought up, both dealing with informed consent. Your hosts have a friend who is a talented and strong healer. She desires to freely give her gift to those she sees who are in need. She tends to assume that they will want this healing and will often begin work without asking. Another example is of someone who has an “allergic” reaction to certain forms of energy manipulation, including reiki. This is where the informed part comes in with the consent.

 

It was at this point that KaliSara posed a question to RevKess that he couldn’t answer. In regards to children, who determines consent for them? RevKess couldn’t answer because he is not a parent. The best correlation he could draw was to his experience babysitting. When a child comes to you complaining of a pain they are asking you to do something to fix it. KaliSara, who is a mother of two, freely admits that she does psychic, energetic, or magickal work on her children. This of course raises the question of interference with the child’s free will – something which KaliSara feels she, as the mother, has the right to do. Limiting or interfering with the free will of a child is something that parents do all the time. Making them ride in a car seat or wear a seat belt even when they don’t want to, not letting them play in the street, not letting them play with matches, etc.

PMP: Erick DuPree

KaliSara and RevKess invited Erick DuPree to join them on the show for a conversation about men in Goddess spirituality, religion. Erick had already been invited on the show by the time Devin Hunter made the following status update on Facebook: “I am not a ‘male priestess.’ That’s quite offensive, the term is Priest of the Goddess. We exist, matriarchy, we exist. Calling me a male priestess is a bit like spiritual castration.” That comment led to a great conversation on his page that included both men and women, priests and priestesses alike. It also lead to the creation o a group page on Facebook called Project Pagan Priest.

Erick DuPree, the author of Alone in Her Presence, The Hero Within: Reframing Masculinity with the Goddess (to be released in 2015), and a blogger is editing the upcoming anthology Finding the Masculine in the Goddess’ Spiral: Men in Ritual, Community and Service to the Goddess. The call for submissions is open until July 30th.

The full submission guidelines can be found on Erick’s webpage. In brief, those who wish to submit and article, essay, poem, or ritual are wide open on what they can write about. The only restrictions, if you will, for submissions be that the author identifies as male. Erick and the publishers at Immanion/Megalithica want to keep the submissions open to men – straight, gay, bi, trans – of all walks of life. The commonality of the contributors is simple this: self-identified as male with a connection to the Goddess in her myriad forms, names, and manifestations.

PMP: Shamanic Astrology

RevKess and KaliSara were joined for this episode by Shamanic Astrology Mystery School founder Daniel Giamario and Shamanic Astrology Mystery School co-founder Cayelin Castell. With fifty some years experience with astrology, Daniel brings a unique perspective to astrology – a non-Sun Sign based perspective. Daniel and Cayelin have also written a handbook to go along with their mystery school, The Shamanic Astrology Handbook – Revised for 2014. Through the art work of Roy Purcell, Daniel has developed a 64 card astrology deck, Shamanic Astrology Divination Deck.

PMP: Sex, ethics and abuse in the magickal world

KaliSara and RevKess attempted to tackle a very difficult topic tonight, especially in light of the recent news that one of the Pagan community’s most well known elders has been arrested and charged with 25 counts of possession of child pornography. Yes, that topic. The one that is on everyone’s minds and lips right now. Kenny Klein, author, musician, teacher and friend to many has apparently let the community down. He was arrested on Tuesday 25 March 2014 at his home in New Orleans.

Joining your hosts for the show were Shauna Aura Knight, who is becoming a regular contributor to PMPChannel, and Taylor Ellwood of Immanion Press / Megalithica Books.   • Over on Pagan in Paradise, Pagan activist, minister and member of Lady Liberty League, Peter Dybing addressed the topic in much more general terms: “Frankly, those who engage in these power over relationships, based on wealth, status or influence perpetuate their privilege and support the subjugation of women. Even worse they reinforce the idea that societal power and status is an appropriate currency to purchase sexual relationships. Such actions contribute greatly to rape culture in our communities.

    The messages sent to young men are that women are objects to be possessed by those who are successful or influential. Confronting our own privilege means standing up and proclaiming that such power based relationships are not acceptable in our communities.

PMP: Ecology & Environmentalism

KaliSara and RevKess were joined by guests Lupa Greenwolf, Arthur and Shauna Aura Knight for a conversation of ecology and environmentalism from a Pagan perspective, that is from FIVE Pagan perspectives. And what varied perspectives they are! Though all five were pretty much in agreement on the necessity of making changes in how humans interact with nature and their environment, they each brought a different way of looking at how to make those changes. The discussion included talk of the future, working with nature – not against, food costs and other issues.

  • Lupa brought up the book Last Child in the Woods by author and ecologist Richard Louv. Louv has written many books on ecology and is a favorite go-to reference for Lupa and others when discussing the topic. His latest book The Nature Principle talks about how a sustainable future can be made possible through nature-smart education.
  • We had hoped to have Peter Beckley join us in conversation, but his broadband was too narrow to connect – living as far off the grid as possible can sometimes do that. He was in chat and shared his thoughts with other chatters, including a link to a permaculture training website.
  • Arthur referenced an interview with singer-songwriter and animal rights activist Moby in which he said that the actual cost of beef in the United States is over $30 a pound but that government subsidies have made it so that the consumer is only visibly paying $3-5 a pound. Note the word “visibly”. Tax payer dollars are used to pay those government subsidies. RevKess found an article on NaturalNews.com from 2011 that sited a non-subsidized cost of $20/pd and KaliSara found one on Big-Medicine.org from 2006 that backs Moby’s claim. The article on NaturalNews indicates that when you factor in the long term environmental and medical costs of subsidized beef could raise the cost per pound to over $200.
  • From beef to aspartame. KaliSara is a huge proponent of being natural with your foods – including your sweeteners. She referenced a 2002 study by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) that indicates that aspartame can be linked to multiple physical and mental health issues, from hearing and vision loss to seizures, from memory loss to dementia. RevKess can attest to some of that, he has experienced loss of concentration and memory retention when consuming beverages that contain aspartame.
  • Some how or another the topic turned to women shaving their legs and arm pits and the “necessity” of deodorants. At which point Arthur, who is very good at trivia, pointed out that a World War II propagandist for the Allies had something major to do with the U.S.’s obsession with shaving, masking scents in the pits and even “flower vomit” detergents. Edward Bernays, nephew of Dr. Freud.
  • Shauna brought up an article on Cracked.com about five byproducts of modern living and how we are burying ourselves in garbage.
  • KaliSara and her “flower vomit” detergent thread in the conversation led to the mention of alternative laundry machines and dryers.

Nami is a student at the Maetreum of Cybele, Mother Cathryn Platine  has also been a regular guest on the show from 2013, Nami was able to sit in on one of those visits.

On March 6, she published an article on PaganActivist.com about Karma and the Just World Fallacy. This caught KaliSara’s eye. Along the way they discuss the Hindu/Eastern concept of Karma and how it relates/compares/contrasts to the Western concept as well as how it relates to the Wiccan concept of the Three Fold Law.

Hour one focused on the main topic of Karma and the Just World Fallacy. Hour two took the conversation in a totally different direction, one leaning towards leadership. Hour three went even further off the title topic into the realm of marketing, budgeting and the reality of being a person in Western culture.

Sacred Oak Circle, an introduction with Rev Gary

Pagan-Musings Podcast Channel is pleased to introduce a new program on their schedule. Sacred Oak Circle. Sacred Oak is hosted by Rev Gary, a third degree high priest of the Correllian Nativist Tradition, based out of the Kansas City area. He’s been a producer on Pagans Tonight and has taken a break from podcasting. He’s climbing back into the saddle with PMPChannel with his own bi-monthly program. Sacred Oak Circle will air every other Tuesday starting on  March 18, 2014 at 6pm Central time.

In his introduction he joined RevKess to talk about the concept and format for  Sacred Oak Circle. Rev Gary comes from a Wiccan background, a unique voice to our channel. He’ll be talking about Wicca, the Correllian tradition in particular, reiki, candle magick, gems and crystals and stones and so much more. He’ll have guests on from time to time to talk about various topics and bring their own perspectives to the table.

Rev Gary is also a big fan of Pagan music, so he will be spot lighting various artists and groups and sharing some of his favorites along the way. Who knows, there might even be an interview or several with some of those Pagan musicians!

PMP: Chronilus, bards adrift in the ether of a timeless human experience

Chronilus joined KaliSara and RevKess on the show. Focusing on their music and how they are using it to build a tribal feel in the Pagan community.

Chronilus released their first EP in December 2013 to rave reviews. They reached #1 in the Celtic genre for the Seattle area and nationwide at #16 and world wide at #25.  Their music has been peer reviewed on ReverbNation.com.

Their sound is their own. With influences from many musicians and genres, they combine Celtic flavor with Eastern European and African elements. They twist it creatively around the idea of traveling through time (and space) to seek out certain truths and archetypes that outlive civilization. They appeal to history buffs, sociology and psychology interests, sex-positive adults, time travel and sci-fi/fantasy enthusiasts and generally people of wall walks of life and love.

Chronilus were podcast virgins before their visit with PMPChannel.  KaliSara and RevKess were pleased to be the Chronilus bandones to pop their collective cherry for this avenue of social media. Bone Deep the Bard, Manfred, Caera and Sonia were a real joy to have one the show. They talked in depth about their inspirations, aspirations, and beliefs. Representing a true Tribe of people, this quartet of musicians bring their talents to the stage on a regular basis. They are deeply involved in their local community – not just as Pagans, but as members of the local poly community and environmentalists.

They sent along some wonderful music for the hosts to share during the show. Including three pieces that are not yet released on CD. Christopher Bingham of Bone Poets Orchestra (formerly Gaia Consort) has graciously given Chronilus permission to cover songs from his projects. The Rede being one of those. Longing is a love song, it is not until you reach the third verse that you realize that it is a lesbian love song. Heave Home captures a taste of what Chronilus is.

On March 21, 2014 they will being doing a benefit concert for Willow Moon, former head of the Everett Pagan Meet Up Group, at Soul Food Coffee House & Fair Trade Emporium in Redmond, WA. For those who cannot make it to the benefit show you can go online and make a donation for Willow Moon. The night of the concert you can also watch it streaming live on the Soul Food site.

PMP: 2014 Pagan Community Events, and more

Thank you for stopping in to view the notes from our show which aired on Sunday 2 March 2014. KaliSara and RevKess had a wonderful conversation about community events and festivals. Unfortunately, the gremlins decided that they wanted to have some fun as well. Thus the audio from RevKess’s end is chopping. For that we sincerely apologize. Between the weather, ancient wiring in his apartment, and other technical issues, there is nothing that could be done to fix the problem.

That said, the conversation was full of wonderful information.
As RevKess was prepping for the show he did a simple Google search for the term “2014 Pagan Festivals”. One of the first links to come up was an article at About.Com in their Paganism/Wicca section. More of an almanac than a listing of festivals, it has some very interesting information. A list of ancient festivals, mostly Greek; birthdays of important individuals in the Pagan movement as well as those who have had influenced on our lives – Joseph Campbell for example.

They spoke in some small detail about a rural-snall town based Pagan group in Central Nebraska. Prairie Star Circle hosted the Kearney Pagan Pride Day in 2013. KaliSara and her family attended that event. Below is the Facebook link and official website of Prairie Star Circle:
RevKess noted that there is also a Nebraska based Druid group, Prairie  Shadow ProtoGrove is based out of Omaha. Their Facebook group is currently closed to the public, but one can ask to join.
