PMP: The Basics of Spellcraft

KaliSara and RevKess scrambled at the last minute to decide on a topic for this edition. Originally, Tuatha Dea was going to be joining them for a conversation about their music and other wonderful things. Unfortunately, a scheduling conflict came up. So, KaliSara suggested visiting the basics of spell work.

As most people, at least when they are starting out, focus on love and money… Prosperity was the topic to launch the discussion with. Later in the show they touched  on love magick.

KaliSara describes her method of spell casting as “the constipated grunt.” RevKess is more or less a ceremonialist. He self described in the show as a 50/50 ceremonialist/”constipated grunter”.

One of the most common forms of spell casting is candle magick. Candle magick is the use of candles when doing magick.  That is a basic definition. The process of candle magick can vary from person to person. Essentially, most practitioners of candle magick will use color correspondences, oils and/or herbs, as well as other objects associated with the intention of the spell being worked. Raymond Buckland has two books on candle magick that the listener might find useful. Practical Candle Burning Rituals and Advanced Candle Magick. These are just two of the many books and resources for candle magick.

spell casting in progress - cat plaqueDuring the show, RevKess used the example of using a green candle for casting a prosperity spell. In the outline for such a spell, he suggests that you choose a green candle as it represents money. (Gold, silver, or white can be used if a green candle is not available. Truly, any color candle will work if it feels right to the spell caster.) One would “dress” or anoint the candle with an appropriate oil and roll it in dried herbs that correspond to the intent of the spell. As this example is a prosperity spell, RevKess suggests olive oil and cinnamon. He also suggested placing a circle of shiny new dimes around the candle. Here is one site which lists herbal correspondences for prosperity and wealth.

Knot magick is another method one can use to bring prosperity into their life. KaliSara talked about a basic knot spell that she has used in the past with some measure of success. Take a string, cord, ribbon, or even a length of your own hair. Tie a knot in one end, this knot represents you. At the other end tie a second knot, this knot represents your desired goal. Loop the cord and tie a knot that brings the previous two knots together. This brings you and the object of your desire together. Burn away the remaining cord as if you were burning away that which keeps you from your goal.

A simple knot spell chant or rhyme that RevKess has known for over 20 years:

By this knot of one
The spell has begun.
By this knot of two
It comes true.
By this knot of three
It must be.
By this knot of four
It’s empowered more.
By this knot of five
The power thrives.
By this knot of six
This spell I fix.
By this knot of seven
‘Tis manna from heaven.
By this knot of eight
It is my fate.
By this knot of nine
My desire is mine.

Herb craft and kitchen witchery are very powerful ways to bring about the manifestation of your desires. Linked above is a site that has some correspondences for herbs useful in prosperity magick. Keeping in mind that not all herbs are edible, kitchen magick or witchery brings the essence of the herbs into your body and as you digest them you incorporate those energies into your being.

Love magick….Well, now. What most people expect when it comes to love magick is that they can cast a spell to bring a specific person into their life for love and sex. KaliSara and RevKess do not condone such magick. Instead, for love magick, they both recommend that any spells cast should be to “bring love into your life.” Sounds cliche, but it is not. One very good way to bring love into your life is to learn to love yourself – all your beauties and all your uglies. It is only when you are comfortable with yourself and love yourself that you can be open and ready to accept the love of another who might be waiting just around the corner or may already be in your life.

At PMPChannel we get several CDs a month plus permission from more artists than we can keep up with during the normal course of shows. A while back RevKess started doing editions of Musica Pagani to showcase those very musicians. KaliSara, Zaracon, Julian and RevKess do their best to give these musicians due time on their shows, but there just isn’t enough time during a news or talk program.

In this first edition of the revised show you hear music from New Age artists like Stephen DeRuby, Anima, Lia Scallon and Dan Kennedy. You also hear from Pagan musicians SJ Tucker, Cernunnos Rising and Tuatha Dea.

Stephen DeRuby‘s newest CD, Awakenings, and the latest from Anima, Light of Aluna, arrived in RevKess’s inbox only days ago. Lia Scallon‘s The Luminous Pearl and Dan Kennedy‘s Intution have been floating around for a little while and have been played on Murphy’s Magic Mess on KZUM. This is their PMPChannel debut.

SJ Tucker did the score to a Pagan themed film called Ember Days and she recently performed in Lincoln, NE. Cernunnos Rising just released their second CD, Urban Druid, and front man George Nicholas and his daughter Katie will be joining KaliSara and RevKess on the 22nd for an edition of Pagan-Musings Podcast. Tuatha Dea just released their third CD, The Tribe, and have been working long and hard with many talented musicians through a new project called The Tribe (Wendy Rule, Damh the Bard, and others have joined up). Tuatha Dea will be joining RevKess and KaliSara on the 29th for Pagan-Musings Podcast.

A week after Heartland and KailSara and RevKess were still “hung over” from all the energy and fun they had. Their show on the 1st talked about some of their experiences and the workshops they attended. A large focus was placed on Tuatha Dea, the headline musicians for the event. A fabulous concert indeed.

Early in the show they spoke briefly with Julian Marcus, the host of “Home of the Ancestors“. HotA premiers this Wednesday, the 5th of June, at 7pm PDT/9pm CDT. This program will talk about ancestral traditions from around the world. From ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt to the Celts of Europe, Asian traditions, African religions and aboriginal traditions from around the globe.

Returning to the show schedule on PMPChannel is the reboot of Musica Pagani, a Pagan and New Age music program hosted by RevKess. This program will once again feature music that is sent to us by the musicians themselves as well as the music from other artists that have granted us their permission to share their wonderful art with our listeners.

The 95th edition the Pagan Weekly News found RevKess still wore out from Heartland and Zaracon recovering froma fall over the weekend. Though Z was unable to be on the air through the whole show, RevKess persevered and filled a good hour and forty-five minutes the show with news and information from, by and about the Pagan community. Below you will find links to many of the articles that were discussed as well further informaiton on those topics. You will also find a play list of the music and links to the artist’s pages.

    • Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone: Janet Farrar is probably one of the best known names in witchcraft, especially when addressing witchcraft in the UK. She and her first husband, Stewart, wrote many books that are still be referenced today by Elders and novices alike. Gavin Bone, Janet’s second husband (hand picked by Stewart and the Goddess Freya), has over two decades of experience in witchcraft and other forms of mysticism. Together they present workshops, classes, and write. At Heartland they present workshops on energy work and a look at the evolution of wtichcraft in the 21st century.
    • Ed “the Pagan” Hubbard: Is the former CEO of Witch School International, recently retired First Elder of the Correllian Nativist Tradition and the CEO of Paganics. Most of us at PMPChannel know him as one of the hosts of Pagans Tonight, a nightly Pagan podcast on BlogTalkRadio. This was our second time seeing Ed at Heartland. Always a good time to sit and visit with him. Ed did several worshops on Pagan Leadership: How Pagan Are You?, The Path to Pagan Prosperity, Growing a Pagan Village, Pagan Leadership Training Raw and Conquering Your World.
    • Mike Nichols is the author The Witches’ Sabbats. He is an author, musician and former radio personality in the KC area. Mike’s worshop was called Wicca’s Blackcloth: The Occult in American History. In this workshop he covered the early influences on occultism in the Americas and how those influences helped shape modern Wicca, at least from an American perspective.
    • Tuatha Dea: Not only did this fabulous Pagan/Blues/Country/Folk band perform for the main concert of the weekend, but they taught a couple of worshops. Both aimed at the younger members of the Pagan community. Teen Team Building for Unity was an interactive rhythm event structured around the use of rhythm as a developmental tool and catalyst for building community through the power of the drum. Child’s Play introduced the truly young (and young at heart) to the basics of drumming for music and ritual use.

    • Finally, but no least: Food in the dining hall was prepared by Food on Wheels from Minnesota. Fabulous food. The chili feed Thursday night was provided free of charge to all attendees and was delicious. Their breakfast buffet was scrumptuous. We provided the rest of our own meals, so we cannot speak to their lunch and dinner menu. After tasting what they had to offer we wish we had purchased the meal plan. Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to find a web address for these wonderful cooks and their kitchen crew.
